Memory Lane

St. Charles Minor Seminary was started in 1953 at Wiaga in the Builsa District of the Upper East Region. The school was the brainchild of the White Fathers (now known as the Missionaries of Africa) who had already established themselves in Navrongo as far back as 1906.  In 1955, the school was moved to Tamale; perhaps because of the strategic position of Tamale as the Administrative capital of the North and the first see of the Catholic Church in the North. The first and second batches of students in Wiaga were 12 and 8 respectively.  The third batch of students who moved to Tamale were 21. The numerical strength of the fourth batch was 29. However, by the end of the year 14 students out of this number were withdrawn for various reasons.  The subsequent years saw growth in the intake of the school.

    Hello,

I have no idea, if it´s right to post my question here, but perhaps someone can help me. There was a boy at St. Charles who passed his exams in 1998. His name is Joachim Amoako. We wrote each other for years, but we are lost now. I thought, perhaps someone knows about him, perhaps theres a possibility to get in contact again.
I´m from Germany, living in Osnabrück now, after living in Nordhorn, a little town at the border of the Netherlands.
    Hoping for a good reply
    in Love

    hi,
i can’t believe it! i found ol’ st.charles secondary school in the internet!…i went to school there from 1968-1970…and i still have fond memories from that time…remembering pater laframboise and brother keith especially…i went to form 1+2…with me were 3 hungarian guys…we were the only white pupils then…i remember joining the school’s boy scout group…and brother keith’s great talent in producing good sausages every three months or so…
great that it still exists and has kept its high standards…
reading those comments above i am suspecting: i wasn’t the last german boy being a member of that school…i hope they have great memories too!….
    best regards,
    Manfred Kramer

    Hi Manfred,

Glad that you found this site. We are doing our bit to bring back memories. 68-70 sounds like a long time ago, but the memories are still intact. Do drop by from time to time and offer any suggestions as to how to make this site and our alma mater a better place!

Till then, have a good day!!!

    WOW what a small world!!!!
I am one of the 3 Hungarian boys who was at school when you arrived in 1968. My brother Zoltan was another and Peter Tusnadi was the 3rd. You are now stretching my memory a bit but I think I took you around the 1st day and showed you the school. My brother and I talked this week about what fun it would be to go back to Ghana and look up our old school. I told him that I would see if there was any info on the web from St Charles. This was the first time in 40 yrs that I looked into the school…….and it took 10 minutes to find your blog. We loughed and could not believe how things work sometimes! We both live in Australia, he is a dentist in Adelaide and I live in Sydney. My Dad still has old movies from Tamale which he has tried to transpose to DVD. Feel free to contact me either thru this site or abakonyi@bigpond.net.au
